Okay first of all I’m super emotional and really mentally unstable right now but like I thought this really deserved a translation so I’m translating the entire article

This is about misogyny in Korea pls don’t take it out of context

major tw for rape, misogyny, violence against women, and sexual violence

Misogyny is spreading on the internet. Not only is it prevalent on Ilbe (Korean version of reddit) where most hate speech originates, it can be found on public sites as well. A bigger problem is that such online misogyny is spilling over to offline misogyny. The teen boy Mr. Kim, who was planning to join and assumed to have joined the IS has shown misogynistic sentiments by stating “I hate feminists, and that’s why I like the IS” on twitter. This made “feminism” the most searched term on the internet for a while. “Gag concert” on KBS has used the word “kimchi girl” which is a word used on the internet as a slur against women.
As the misogyny in Korean society has reached dangerous levels, the research center for gender equality of the Korean Women’s Association United has published a “report on online hate speech against women” by monitoring 5 sites, namely Ilbe, DC Inside, the debate forum on Daum Agora, replies on Naver news articles and Nate Pann (the latter three are the largest portals in Korea) through requesting and commisioning the help of Kim Soo Ah, a professor at the research center at Seoul National University. This is the first research paper monitoring the hate speech against women and its problems done by a women’s rights organization.
Hate spreading against all Korean women
The research team defined misogyny as ‘emotions including hate, disdain, and prejudice against women’. The team classified different misogynistic hate speech to those that put down or showed disdain toward women on the basis of their appearance, their sexuality, age, and competence, and those that encouraged discrimination and prejudice.
According to the paper, those that involved a woman’s appearance didn’t stop at hating or showing despise against a woman for being ugly or fat, but went on to say they wanted to kill such women. This is not simple discrimination against a woman’s appearance but a powerful expression of hate. Another term was a “plastic monster” which is a combination of disdain for a woman’s appearance and attack on plastic surgery. This attack was enlarged to attack all Korean woman, as it assumed that plastic surgery was a phenomenon unique to Korean women and went on to produce more prejudice.
Those that were linked to women’s sexuality and femininity often combined parts of the body or a woman’s sexual organs (I’d like to add that this is for cis women) to attack women. The term “cuntgeoisie” (the literal translation isn’t quite correct but you’re getting the gist of what the term means) was used generally online. This was not only in websites that were often considered filled with hate and swear words such as DC Inside or Ilbe, but on MLB park or Today’s Humor or Nate Pann as well, which is used by a wider audience with more variety. The research team stated that “in MLB park or Today’s Humor where there are strict rules and guidances in the community, those who use this term emphasize that this is not towards all women and just a few women”. However, this view still argues that such “cuntgeoisie” exists in real life and that women do have this tendency, explained the research team.
One of the more often used words against women that involved their age was “delisted women”. This was made in Ilbe, where it means women who are over the age of 30 are just like delisted stock in that they’re both useless. This was widely used in Naver news article replies or Nate pann, and there were plenty of other expressions that put down older women’s value even if this word wasn’t used.
The rise of extreme hate speech
This research also showed that there are particular expressions and acronyms that involve violence and threat against women. The word “once per 3 days” which was made in Ilbe and meant that women should be beaten once every three days spread to DC Inside and Naver news article replies and other online sites and shortened to “311”. Other expressions, while not often found, included rape threates and violence against women’s sexual organs in conjunction to murder threates or threats that encouraged violence. “Cunts and lightning bulbs” which means “put a lightning bulb in her cunt and break the lightning bulb inside” is an example of such extremely violent expressions. In DC Inside Korean baseball galleries there were replies that implied rape isn’t a crime but something that’s natural, and under news articles on Naver about girls who were kidnapped by the IS there were expressions such as “Korean women should be sent there”. Rape was shortened to “r”.
Research shows that a word often used with the above expressions was “kimchi girl”. This means “women who are gold diggers, rate men by their wealth and try to elevate their status through men” and often used on posts online about paying on dates and wedding costs.
The research show concluded that “Ilbe is very problematic in that it gives birth to violent expressions and an overal misogynist rhetoric” and that “while sexism and misogyny isn’t as extreme and violent as those found in Ilbe, it is already rooted in everyday life”.
There is especially a phenomenon where “women try to become ‘not one of those women’ and hating other women” as misogyny spreads online. This spreads misogyny and prejudice against women and strengthens such sentiments by dividing women to “kimchi girls and non-kimchi girls” and state that “there are women who should be discriminated against”. The research team demonstrated that the “like” button on the Naver news article replies show that misogyny is reaching dangerous levels. On many such replies where it was isuch women should be jailed in the same cell as rapists and thus implied that they should be raped, the number of those who clicked “like” was often more than 3 times the number of those who clicked “dislike”.
The research team pointed out that “under neoliberal capitalism it is true that women in certain upper classes got more chance but it doesn’t mean that all women did, and discrimination and polarization is becoming worse” and that “there should be something done to stop the current online communities which foster confrontation against the sexes”
The team went on to state that “there should be a reconstruction of equality between the sexes that are currently represented by misogyny in online communities by the public sector, the private sector, and the users”. They suggested solutions such as literacy education (to teach how to critically approach subjects and compare them) for teens and adults, a system that would monitor such hate speech, and stricter rules in big portal sites.

I am tired of defending Korean men

also fuck white women who talk about koreans and plastic surgery all the time
